The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced the appointment of a new South-East Caretaker Committee following approval by its National Working Committee (NWC).
The announcement, signed by Hon. Umar M. Bature, National Organising Secretary of the PDP, listed the new appointees:
- Chairman: Chief Chidiebere Egwu
- Secretary: Hon. Mike Ahumibe
- Members: Pascal Ukwani, Barr Ukpai Ukairo, Hon. Kingsley Okafor, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, Hon. Obiora Ugwu, Mrs. Anthonia Nwankwo, and Emeka Okeke
“Accordingly, the assignment takes effect from December 2nd, 2025, and the Committee is charged with running the affairs of the Party in the South-East, as stipulated in Section 21(2)(a-b) of our Party Constitution, for a period not exceeding 30 days,” the statement said.
The move comes amid deepening internal crises within the PDP, which have been intensifying since the 2023 general elections. Wike’s public rift with the party’s national leadership first emerged during the presidential primaries, where he accused the party of favoring northern candidates and breaching rotational arrangements.
The dispute escalated after the election when Wike accepted a ministerial appointment in the APC-led federal government, a decision many PDP stakeholders denounced as disloyal. This has led to factionalization in states including Rivers, Imo, and Ekiti, complicating efforts to restore party unity.
Recently, the pro-Wike faction ratified the expulsion of several prominent figures, including governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), as well as former Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, and Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja. They were accused of engaging in anti-party activities.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Wike faction also approved the dissolution of State Executive Councils in Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Lagos, Edo, and Ekiti states during the 103rd NEC meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Presenting the memo on the expulsions, Acting National Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman stated that the affected members’ disregard for court judgments had brought the party into disrepute.
The new caretaker committee in the South-East is expected to stabilize the faction’s operations while the broader PDP crisis continues to unfold.
