The Delhi Police has registered a case of gang rape following a complaint by an 18-year-old BTech first-year studentof South Asian University (SAU), Delhi, who alleged that she was sexually assaulted by four unidentified men inside the campus on Sunday evening.
Key Allegations in the FIR
- Threatening Emails: The victim had received threatening emails for two to three days prior to the incident from an unknown address. The sender allegedly demanded that she meet near the guest house of the campus on Saturday night, which she ignored.
- Obscene Mails: The following day, another email, written in obscene language, instructed her to come outside her hostel block. She showed the messages to friends, who checked the location but found no one there.
- Morphed Photos: On Sunday, the student received morphed obscene photographs of herself via WhatsApp and Telegram. The messages threatened to circulate the images among students if she did not appear at Gate Number 3.
- Assault by Four Men: According to the FIR, a security guard and three men allegedly forced her into an empty room near the convocation centre and sexually assaulted her.
- Attempt to Force ‘Abortion Pill’: The victim claimed one attacker tried to force a pill into her mouth, which she spat out. The FIR mentions that the pill was reportedly an abortion pill, accompanied by threats regarding her unborn child.
- University Response: The FIR alleges that the hostel administration dismissed the victim’s account despite a doctor emphasizing the seriousness. The hostel-in-charge reportedly told her to “take a bath and change clothes”, prevented her from contacting her mother, and obstructed video calls showing her injuries.
- Police Intervention: Friends made a PCR call on Monday afternoon. A female sub-inspector responded, and the victim underwent counselling and medical examination at Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital before recording her formal statement.
Legal Action
The FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:
- Section 70 – Gang rape
- Section 62 – Attempt to commit offence
- Section 123 – Causing hurt by means of poison
- Section 140(3) – Kidnapping
- Section 115(2) – Voluntarily causing hurt
- Section 126(2) – Wrongful restraint
- Section 3(5) – Common intention
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan confirmed that the case is being investigated with due sensitivity and priority, and police teams are working to identify and apprehend the accused.
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding campus security, administrative response, and protection of female students.
