Former Kenya PM Raila Odinga Dies at 80 While Undergoing Treatment in Kerala

Former Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga passed away at the age of 80 on Wednesday at a hospital in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, where he had been receiving treatment for an eye-related ailment. The incident occurred at the Sreedhariyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre in Koothattukulam, where Odinga had been admitted for six days.

According to hospital officials, Odinga collapsed during a morning walk within the hospital premises. He was immediately rushed to a nearby facility, but doctors declared him dead, citing cardiac arrest as the cause of death.

“When he was brought into the hospital nearly a week ago, he was in a wheelchair. But over the past few days, he was able to walk independently,” a hospital official said. Odinga was accompanied throughout his treatment by his daughter Rosemary Odinga and a personal physician.

Odinga’s remains were transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital in Ernakulam, where they were expected to be embalmed. Further arrangements are to be made in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Kenyan Embassy, according to officials.

Political Career and Legacy

Raila Odinga served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and was a longtime opposition leader, known for his persistent efforts to challenge incumbents in the country’s political landscape. Over his career, he contested the presidency five times, including in 2022, but was unsuccessful.

A member of the Luo tribe, Odinga first entered Kenya’s Parliament in 1992 and built a reputation as an anti-establishment firebrand, despite belonging to one of Kenya’s prominent political dynasties. His leadership and advocacy made him a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades, championing democracy, reform, and social justice.

Odinga’s death marks the end of an era in Kenyan politics, with his legacy remembered for his resilience, dedication to public service, and enduring influence as a national and regional leader.
