‘Nigeria Going Through Painful Times, Will Defeat Terrorism’ – NSA Ribadu

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has acknowledged that Nigeria is experiencing “painful times” but reassured citizens that the country would not relent in its fight against terrorism.

Ribadu, highlighting Nigeria’s unique position as the only functioning democracy in the Sahel region, expressed confidence that terrorism would ultimately be defeated.

He made the remarks during the ‘Dialogue on the Role-of-Society Approach to the Prevention of Violence and Conflict in Northern Nigeria’, organised by the National Peace Committee, The Kukah Centre, and the Office of the NSA (ONSA) in Abuja.

“We are going through painful times, but this phase will pass. Nations across our region — from the Sahel to East Africa and South Asia — face similar or even more protracted challenges. Nigeria remains the only functioning democracy in the entire Sahel, and we must protect that achievement. We will defeat terror. We will restore order. We will not give up, and we will not surrender,” Ribadu said.

The NSA emphasized the crucial role of communities, religious leaders, traditional rulers, local authorities, and state governments in preventing violence. He noted that empowering communities to resolve disputes locally can significantly reduce the need for military intervention.

“Nigeria desires peace. Our people deserve peace. And together, with sincerity and shared responsibility, we can build the stable, prosperous, and united society we all long for,” Ribadu added.

The dialogue underscored the importance of a societal approach to security, advocating collaboration between government, civil society, and local communities in addressing the root causes of conflict and terrorism.
