Nigerian MDAs Budget N6.6 Billion to Fuel Generators in 2026

Amid ongoing electricity supply challenges, 20 federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have allocated a total of N6.626 billion for generator fuel in the 2026 fiscal year, according to budget data analysis.

Key Highlights:

  • Security and law-enforcement agencies dominate the spending, accounting for about 63% (N4.17 billion) of the total. This includes the Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Defence Academy, Police formations, National Security Adviser’s office, EFCC, Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, and Federal Fire Service.
  • The EFCC received the highest allocation with N1.2 billion for generator fuel. Other large allocations include:
    • Ministry of Foreign Affairs – N567.9 million
    • Police formations/commands – N511 million
    • Ministry of Defence Headquarters – N455 million
  • Civil and administrative agencies received more modest allocations, averaging around N331 million per agency. For example, the Ministry of Finance got N325 million, the Office of the Head of Civil Service N342 million, and the Auditor-General N200.586 million.
  • Media agencies received smaller amounts: Voice of Nigeria N235 million and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria N136.8 million. The lowest allocations went to the Petroleum Training Institute (N103 million) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (N160 million).

The reliance on diesel and petrol-powered generators highlights persistent power supply challenges across government institutions, despite ongoing investments in alternative energy. For instance, the Aso Rock Villa has a N7 billion allocation for solarisation in 2026, following a previous N10 billion in 2025, yet N1.989 billion is still earmarked for fuel, with an additional N17.2 million for generator maintenance.

The budget data underscores a stark disparity in spending and raises questions about the pace of transitioning to sustainable energy in Nigeria’s federal institutions.
