Ochanya’s Family to Pursue Civil Suit as Main Suspect Remains Free Seven Years Later

The family of the late 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, who died in 2018 after alleged serial rape, has announced it is considering a civil lawsuit against those implicated in her death.

This decision comes as the primary suspect, Victor Ogbuja, remains at large. John Ameh, a journalist and family member, revealed the plan during a television interview on Friday, expressing deep frustration with the Benue State Government and the Nigeria Police Force for their failure to apprehend Ogbuja.

Ameh highlighted the contradictory court rulings in the case as evidence of systemic failure. “It is shocking that the same issue before two courts produced two different outcomes. The State High Court acquitted and discharged Andrew Ogbuja, while the Federal High Court convicted his wife on the same facts,” he stated.

He further alleged that despite public outcry, Victor Ogbuja continues to live freely, suggesting official negligence and political protection have shielded him from justice.
