Actor Taye Arimoro has formally contested his suspension by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), and Association of Movie Producers (AMP) following an on-set dispute with actress Peggy Ovire. The incident took place during the filming of Pieces of Love.
In a strongly-worded letter, Arimoro’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, described the guilds’ actions as “procedurally improper, legally indefensible, and constitutionally void,” citing misidentification, lack of jurisdiction, and procedural irregularities.
Effiong pointed out that the guilds mistakenly referred to Arimoro as “Taiye Ayimoro” instead of his correct name, Taiwo Arimoro, and failed to provide him a fair hearing. Arimoro, who is not a member of any of the three guilds, argued that their disciplinary measures are unlawful and constitute an undue interference in his acting career.
“Our client is not a member of the DGN, AGN, or AMP. These bodies have no legal authority to discipline or regulate him in any way. Any sanctions or directives issued against him are therefore ultra vires and unenforceable,” the letter stated.
The objection further cited multiple violations, including withholding evidence and infringing on Arimoro’s right to freedom of association. He is demanding an immediate retraction of the sanctions, a formal written apology, and public dissemination of the apology within 24 hours, or he will pursue a ₦1 billion lawsuit against the guilds and their respective presidents.
Effiong added, “A stitch in time saves nine,” urging the guilds to resolve the matter promptly and avoid litigation.
