Transafam Power Launches Elderly Support Initiative, Pledges Annual Wellness Day for Host Communities

Transafam Power Limited, one of the power generation subsidiaries of Transnational Corporation Plc, has inaugurated its first-ever Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme dedicated to senior citizens in its host community of Okoloma-Afam in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The new initiative delivered extensive medical screening, wellness education, food items, and essential household supplies to more than 30 elderly residents—24 women and six men. Beneficiaries also received long-term health monitoring tools, underscoring Transafam Power’s commitment to improving the well-being of people living around its operations.

Managing Director/CEO Engr. Vincent Ozoude described the launch as the beginning of a long-term tradition.
“Today marks the beginning of what will become an annual tradition,” he said. “As a company that powers nearly one-fifth of Nigeria’s electricity needs alongside our sister company, Transcorp Power Plc, we understand that true progress is not only measured in megawatts but also in the lives we touch. Caring for the elders who built the foundation of this community is both a privilege and a responsibility.”

The event opened with a health talk by specialist doctors from Avon Medical Practice, who educated participants on healthy ageing, hypertension control, diabetes prevention, and general preventive care. This was followed by free vital checks, medical consultations, laboratory tests where necessary, and immediate medication dispensing.

In one of the day’s most widely praised gestures, each senior citizen received a digital blood pressure monitor, a three-month pack of multivitamins, and a bundle of food items, toiletries, bedding, and other essentials.

The Elderly Wellness Day initiative forms part of Transafam Power’s broader healthcare-focused CSR pillar, which also includes waste management efforts, community medical consultations, and youth employment opportunities.

Community leaders and beneficiaries at the event commended the company for the initiative’s depth and organisation, describing it as “highly impactful” for elderly residents in Okoloma-Afam.

Transafam Power also announced that the Elderly Wellness Day will become an annual flagship programme as part of its expanding portfolio of community development efforts targeting improved health, education, economic empowerment, and overall quality of life.
